My favourite Toronto engagement locations and photo ideas

You just got engaged…Congratulations! If you want to commemorate this exciting time with photos you’ll love, you won’t need to go far from home. Toronto has many amazing locations that will serve as the perfect backdrop for photos to celebrate the two of you.

Downtown, West End, East End, North York: There are stunning locations throughout our city that could make the perfect setting for your photo shoot. Below are some of my favourite locations I have photographed in the past.  Any of these destinations would be a fantastic backdrop for your engagement session!

DOWNTOWN

Graffiti Alley
Few things pop in a photo like all the colours in Graffiti Alley. This Queen West location gives a playful edge to your photos, all while embracing your (and Toronto’s) artistic side.
Idea: Wear white or some bright solid colours so you will still stand out among the beautiful chaos of the background.

Distillery District
Toronto’s Distillery District is a go-to spot for film and photography- for good reason! It features cobblestone streets, heritage clocks and signage, and historic red brick buildings. There are even places made for engagement photos, such as the heart sculpture and “LOVE” sign!
Idea: Have your photos taken under strings of lights at night for photos that will have a (timelessly romantic) moonlit glow.
Love historic settings? St Lawrence Market is another option that offers old world charm. Plus, photos inside the market would have great energy and be perfect for self-proclaimed foodies.

U of T
The downtown (St George) campus of the University of Toronto has a grand architecture that looks great in photos. If you met at U of T or studied there, even better!
Idea: The lush vines and stone archways at Hart House combine nature and architecture for photos that will really stand out.

EAST END

Scarborough Bluffs
Have your photos taken overlooking Lake Ontario from the majestic bluffs. This location is truly breathtaking since you can stand high up on the sandy bluffs with brilliant blue beyond you.
Idea: A billowing dress or streaming veil would also look stunning against the blue backdrop when a breeze comes in off the water

The Beach
The Boardwalk and sandy shores are definitely a great place to take beautiful photos. Leuty Lifeguard Station is a well-known Toronto landmark, so photos can celebrate you as a couple and the city you love.
Idea: Bring four-legged friends to Cherry Beach for engagement photos that include your dogs. At Woodbine Beach pose on rocks lining the shore- or have fun photos taken of you two playing beach volleyball!
Want Beaches scenery without the sand? Consider the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant. The building itself is very unique and often used as a backdrop for films. It also sits on a hill overlooking Lake Ontario.

Evergreen Brick Works
This historic location in the Don Valley has heritage buildings, picturesque trails along ponds, and industrial warehouse space. Bonus: All businesses here are environmentally sustainable.
Idea: Photos in the kiln building will have a backdrop of soaring metal beams, pipes, exposed brick hallways and, of course, the site’s preserved kilns.

WEST END

High Park
Your engagement photos can be taken by Coronation Pond, the “maple leaf” garden (a large red maple leaf made entirely of flowers), and at other scenic spots here. If it’s cherry blossom season be prepared for a crowd!
Idea: Have photos taken strolling along the historic path in High Park Zoo, or engaging with (no pun intended) some baby reindeer or other exotic animals.

Humber Bay Park
This is a great spot for lakeside photos at various lookout points right on the lake (including Etobicoke Point at the far west end of Humber Bay Shores parkland). If you live on the west end, Sunnyside Beach is another place to take equally beautiful sandy shore photos without a longer trek to the east.
Idea: Unique backdrops include the soaring curves of the Humber Bay Arch Bridge, and the white sails and blue water at the Yacht Club.

Casa Loma
Found in midtown, but west of Yonge Street sits this real-life castle. If you want that “once upon a time…” feeling to come through in your engagement photos, look no further than the gorgeous grounds of Casa Loma.
Idea: For exterior shots, include the whole castle in the background by posing in front of the fountain in the gardens.

NORTH YORK

Aga Khan Museum
This North York cultural destination has some of the most striking architecture around. It’s towering white angles and square reflecting pools make it an incredible place for engagement photos that are the opposite of park/beach photos you might see more often.
Idea: Wear black and white to really play up the modern-art feel of this site. Or, wear colours that will pop against this backdrop, like bright red!

Black Creek Pioneer Village
This historic village is a place to take engagement photos with a little whimsy. It has various heritage buildings and parkland. Dress in vintage finds, or dress up to contrast the rustic background.
Idea: Photos front of the blacksmith shop, the stone entrance to the apple cellar, the saddlery, and other historic buildings are truly one of a kind. High school sweethearts? Pose in front of the red brick schoolhouse!

Any questions about taking engagement photos in different Toronto locations? (Many do require a fee for a permit). Contact us to discuss ideas and plans for your engagement session.

Again, Congratulations! We hope some of these ideas have inspired you!
